If we had to name just one mid-generation guitarist who is shaping the face of modern funk and groovy music, it would be Minneapolis-born Cory Wong. The musician, who has enjoyed success with Vulfpeck and Fearless Flyers as well as under his own name, is one of the brightest stars of this year’s open-air edition of Groove Brno.
In addition to his guitar technique, Cory Wong has also managed to conquer the world of the Internet. He hosts several shows and podcasts, creates entertaining content and shows how to make the most of partnerships with companies such as Apple and Fender. But underneath that face, there’s still a musician’s heart beating. He’s known for his brilliant technique and precise, rhythmic playing, as well as a dynamic approach to playing that invites both dancing and quiet, focused listening.
Wong is a genre chameleon. He takes inspiration from classic 70s funk and brings it into the present by working with electronics. He doesn’t hesitate to jump from funk to jazz, pop and rock, all delivered with typical electric energy and verve. He has collaborated with the Dave Matthews Band, Dirty Loops, who we saw at Groove Brno, and Jon Batiste on Meditations, which earned him a Grammy nomination.
