A Balkan brass band at a festival specialising in funky music? Don’t be surprised! The grooves that Boban & Marko Marković Orkestar bring with them will certainly captivate you with their unique southern European flair. The large ensemble, which has been called “the best Serbian brass band of all time”, will also bring its more modern and funky repertoire to Brno.
The band, which now includes founding father Boban Marković and his son Marko, an equally accomplished musician, has become internationally famous thanks to the unique films of director Emir Kusturica. Marković’s orchestra gave Kusturica’s films Underground and Arizona Dream a totally unique soundscape, which of course, along with Kusturica’s unique magical-realist vision, undoubtedly contributed to their success.
Boban Markovic’s (born in 1964 in the southern Serbian village of Vladičin Han) unique melodicism and sense of rhythm run like blood through his veins, firmly rooted in his DNA. Formal musical education was a waste of time for him. It is no coincidence that he is the only trumpeter to be included by the prestigious British magazine SongLines in its survey of the fifty most outstanding instrumentalists in the history of music. Don’t miss one of the most original concerts at this year’s Groove Brno.
